Sangallo trend

Last year the clothes, costumes and accessories made in Sangallo had depopulated and this year as well! In 2021 the big names made garments in this fabric of Swiss origin, and a little everyone is adding it to their collections this year.

Delicate, elegant, fresh, simple, romantic, suitable for all ages and any occasion, and ideal for dresses, skirts, blouses, costumes, and much more are some of these fabric characteristics. It is a fabric made with openwork or full relief embroidery. The most common are in cotton and linen; in fact, the association of this fabric with summer garments with embroidered sleeves or hems is immediate. Whether geometric or floral motifs, Sangallo is well suited to the day and important occasions, embellishing the light cotton of wedding dresses. But let's find out more about its history together. The Sangallo lace, developed in the early 1800s, takes its name from the Swiss town of San Gallo, which is the largest producer. The city has a long tradition of textile production and processing, born in the Middle Ages, which allowed it to distinguish itself first in the production and export of high-quality linen fabrics, which were indispensable in everyday life and a great source of income and later (1750 approximately) in the production and weaving of cotton with hand embroidery.

The progress of time, technological progress and the industrial revolution significantly affected the city's textile industry. Josse Heilmann developed the first-hand embroidery machine capable of embroidering using more than 300 needles simultaneously, thus transferring the motif several times desired on the fabric. Then, F.E. Rittmeyer and F.A. Vogler adapted it for series production. The invention of the embroidery machine revolutionized the textile industry and made possible the triumph of the European embroidery industry in the St. Gallen region. At that time, more than 20,000 machines of this type were built for St. Gallen embroidery alone. The prestigious embroidery produced became very popular before the First World War. High society ladies never missed an opportunity to show off their elaborate dresses.

And over time, all the great designers continued to use it to create bodices (see Dior), dresses, skirts, blouses and much more. We at Texitalia have different types of Sangallo in our fabrics. We have been offering it for years because we know how beautiful it is and how many wonderful garments you can make with it!
